The key to a well functioning classroom is proactivity. As a teacher, one of my responsibilities is to foresee what could happen and work towards preventing undesirable situations.
Be knowledgeable about students
Know their interests and use them in lesson planning

Talk to them
Have them share ideas
Know what type of interventions works best for each student
Set limits
Be authoritative/assertive
Establish classroom rules with students
Display rules in the classroom
Set expectations at the beginning of an activity
